Release Day – BEAUTY AND THE CURSE

image002What do you get when you cross an author who writes humorous, sweet contemporary romance with an author who writes darker, steamier sci-fi and paranormal romance? You get a humorous adult fairy tale, BEAUTY AND THE CURSE.

My critique partner and author, Cathy Tully, and I had a blast writing this novella together.

It’s only $1.99 on Kindle. Please check it out & if the spirit moves you, we’d love a tweet, Facebook mention, or a Goodreads TBR add!

Cursed by a jealous witch, wealthy recluse Anabel Charming is destined to grow uglier with each passing year. Only by having sex before her twenty-first birthday can this virgin’s spell be broken. Yet no man will agree to sleep with the humpbacked, pockmarked, one-leg-shorter-than-the-other “Freak of Park Avenue.”

When handsome Chase Singleton shows up on a quest to retrieve his grandmother’s long-lost talisman, which Anabel now possesses, Anabel is willing to give up the jewel…if Chase agrees to break her curse. With two days left before her chance at a normal life is lost forever, Anabel and Chase discover the reality of beauty, the power of sexual healing, and the meaning of love.

“With engaging characters, witty prose, and a surprisingly sweet romance, Beauty and the Curse delivers a thoroughly entertaining and heart-warming read.” —Melinda Leigh, bestselling author of She Can Run

Fearless Excerpt:

Angry red streaks snaked through his aura. “What manner of trickery is this?”

“Get off of me, barbarian.”

Name-calling? Really? Had her father taught her nothing?

“Barbarian? That’s funny coming from a savage.”

She gasped. “Savage? You’re the one on top of me.”

“As I recall, I wouldn’t be on top of you if I hadn’t needed to protect myself from your tricks.”

“I am a spiritual healer. I only wanted to repair your soul. You must release my people.”

“They’re free to go at any time. They choose to stay.”

His weight was crushing her, making breathing difficult, but she refused to let him see her discomfort. If she could calm herself enough, her spirit could reenter his, and she could try healing him again. This might be the only chance she got before he…What would he do to her?

She didn’t sense anything evil, vile, or malicious. Murder wasn’t present in his aura. The only thing she perceived was arousal. Typical male. Perhaps she could use that to her advantage.

There were three occasions when a person’s spirit was the most vulnerable: during sleep, during illness, and during sex—so she’d been told.

“You’ve invaded our peaceful village and took our people against their will. Forgive me for not believing you.” Her words were angrier than she wanted them to be. What happened to her shamanic training?

“Seems we have a lot in common, you and I.”

“We have nothing in common, barbarian.”

“Did you not invade my body against my will?”

“To heal your spirit.”

“So you say, savage.”

Would he stop calling her that? She was not a fierce, violent person. She was tranquil and at peace with the universe, dammit.

Well, at least she strove for peace.

“However,” he continued, “you needn’t concern yourself. My spirit requires no healing.”

“So say you. But our spirits have met, and yours told me it hid a deep wound. Let me back in. Let me into your body to heal you.”

His smirk surprised her. What could he possibly find so humorous?

“If anyone enters another’s body, it will be me.” His warm lips pressed against hers. As if to prove his point, his tongue coaxed hers to open for him.

She’d been kissed before, but not from a man so dangerous and commanding, or so good at it.

Well, she wasn’t about to waste the opportunity to do what she came here for, especially since nothing in his aura indicated malicious intent. His spirit simply sought to demonstrate his male dominance in a kiss. Nothing more. Ha. He’d learn who the dominant one was when she connected with his spirit again.

She opened her mouth and kissed him back. His pause indicated surprise. He’d obviously expected her to resist. When she didn’t let up, his jaw relaxed and his kiss deepened. She couldn’t deny the freedom her soul felt.

But she’d come to heal his heart, and as much as she would like to give in to the pleasure she was receiving, she needed to heal him first.

Again retreating to that tranquil place in her mind, her spirit gathered energy and flowed from her body into his. Her spirit didn’t get further than the impenetrable stone wall before it was thrown from his body again.

His lips were off hers, the weight of his body disappeared. The influx of warm night air came as a relief.

“Savage,” he boomed. “Stay out of my body.”

“If you enter my body, barbarian, rest assured I will enter yours.”

FEARLESS Release Day

Fearless CoverHOORAY! Today is release day for FEARLESS, book 2 in the Survival Race series. I’m super excited to share Fearless’ awesome first review (4 stars) from Goodreads!

“This is the follow up book to Captive and a fantastic piece of sci fi romance…I found the world building here to be truly fascinating…. Very good follow up to Captive. The first book explored being taken prisoner by aliens and trying to survive whereas this book explored the idea of living as a native on a planet dominated by a brutal race. Fans of the first book will be delighted to catch up with characters from the previous book and new readers will surely be clamouring to catch up! Recommended”- Marta Cox

You can read a sexy excerpt from the book and enter to win a free copy at Taking Time For Mommy’s blog today. Here is the book’s blurb…

TWO SOULS
Myia, a shaman-in-training, wants desperately to protect her peaceful village from the barbaric Highland invaders. To hone her powers of prophetic visions and healing, the village elders send Myia on a quest to heal the Highland leader’s heart and stop a brewing war. Myia’s mended many souls before, so this should be an effortless duty…until she meets the gorgeous, stubborn Highland warlord.

ONE DESIRE
Kedric, a gladiator who escaped enslavement, only wants to liberate the villagers from their common foe-a race that breeds humans for blood sport and genetic experiments. Fueled by his rage, Kedric is determined to take down the brutal enemy. So when a raven-haired beauty with a body made for sin tries to sabotage his mission, Kedric wants her gone. Yet no woman’s touch has ever left Kedric more annoyed…or aroused. Kedric knows he should shun her soothing embrace-but he can’t seem to stay away. As their passion grows, Kedric must decide between fighting his war or surrendering his rage-and his heart-for Myia’s love.

Forbidden Love by Ellis Carrington

Forbidden LoveAs you all know, I’m a huge fan of gay romance. I love to read it and I write it. So, I figured I”d use my post today as a bit of blatant promotion for my my good friend, Ellis Carrington.  Ellis’s latest release is a novella entitled Forbidden Love (Amor Prohibido).  It’s a great story, in English not Spanish as the alternate title might imply, and it’s definitely worth checking out. Let me tell you a little bit about it.

Jacob Freehan has no job, no man, and no motivation. In pain both from ending a long-term abusive relationship and a severe back injury, he escapes to the sunny seaside town of Puerto Morelos, Mexico for a little yoga, a little R&R, and possibly a place to quietly end his own life.

Pakal is a centuries-old immortal Mayan spirit guide who has been charged with getting Jacob on the path toward healing. Romantic involvement with a spirit charge is strictly forbidden, and it has never been a problem…until now. Pakal sees something special in Jacob, but failure to keep a rapidly growing attraction at bay could result in Jacob losing his life and Pakal being condemned to the Underworld forever…

Now meet Ellis:

Romance requires a hopeful ending and that is why Ellis Carrington is driven to write it. She loves to create original stories that are gritty, witty, and a little unexpected, just like the heroes who inhabit them. Her guys come in both human and non-human form because spirit guides and vampires deserve love too. Her favorite things are great friends, great music, and books that make her laugh and cry like there’s no tomorrow. You can find out more about Ellis at her website, Twitter, or Facebook.

If you’re looking for a little man love mixed with your paranormal romance then check out Forbidden Love.

What Makes a Hero Sexy?

word-sexyWhat makes a hero sexy? When a friend of mine posed this topic to me a while back, I figured this would be a pretty easy question to answer. The more I thought about it, I realized it wasn’t as easy of a question to answer as I’d hoped. Why? In part because sexy, in my opinion, is very subjective. What one person finds attractive another won’t. So,  I started thinking about some of the characters I found sexy in books and what traits made made them so appealing.

At the top of my list is Roarke from J.D. Robb’s In Death series. I’ll also include both Joe Morelli and Ranger from the Stephanie Plum series. What do these particular characters have in common?

First they’re all attractive. That’s part of the fantasy after all isn’t it.  As a reader, I like to have pretty people wandering through my head as I’m told a story.  Depending on the writer they run the gambit on how descriptive they are in describing their characters attractiveness, but they leave you just enough room to formulate your own image of that character whether it be a celebrity of something that’s purely a figment of your own imagination.

Another shared characteristic of sexy heroes is intelligence. Let’s face it, your character could be an Adonis, but it they’re dumb as a stump no one is going to read on.  Me personally, I have a thing for the  geeky hero. For me super smart is extremely sexy.

A third trait that I think is part of the sexy hero formula is confidence.  Jumping back to the three characters I mentioned everyone one of them is a badass and they know it.  It’s not only because they can kick ass.  It’s their attitude it just drips with power and self assurance. It’s because of that confidence that it’s uber sexy when they make themselves vulnerable to the person that they love.

I’m sure there are more traits that make up a sexy hero these are just a few that come off the top of my head. But I’ll put it out there to you. What do you think makes a hero sexy and memorable?

AN UNDENIABLE PASSION

An alpha gladiator, Max is forced to breed and produce the finest specimens for the Survival Race, a deadly blood sport created by the alien rulers of Hyborea. But their jailors will not be denied, and soon Addy and Max find themselves unwilling players in this cruel game. Pushed to the limit, they will risk everything for the chance at a life free from captivity. Collaboration. Is It For You?

If someone asked me five years ago whether I’d ever consider co-writing a book/short story with another author I’d probably have said no, because being the insecure writer I was, I didn’t think I had the skill set necessary for a collaboration. At the time, I viewed writing as a solitary endeavor. A mind bending, hair pulling, harder than heck task writer’s prefer to experience alone.

But over the past few years, I’ve attended conferences and listened to writers talk about collaborating together like Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer. And I thought, well, yeah, she’s Jen Crusie, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to write with her? Thank goodness with time, most of us change, grow, and open our minds to opportunities that we would once have dismissed.

The end result: my critique partner, and I are co-writing a novella we hope to sell sometime this year. It’s an urban fantasy, a genre, I’ve never read or given much thought to before this project. After all, I  write romance, sweet and contemporary, and urban fantasy is on the other side of the football field in writing, but after discussing it, we decided to give this co-writing thing a whirl.

Of course, we started with an outline, which we changed, revised, and changed some more, until we were both happy with the end result.  Mixing my partner’s strong editing abilities and use of emotion with my inane ability to throw down a humorous scene with sensitive characters has been a blast, and I think I can speak for both of us when I say we are having the time of our lives.

The characters in this novella are a bit eccentric, but that’s what makes this project so much fun. I’m finding that exploring a new genre is also affecting my other writing projects in that I return to them excited. This excitement increases my productivity and imagination. Although I’ve always been one of those writer’s who can work on two projects at one time, I didn’t find bouncing in and out of those books a complete brain reset like I do when switching genres.

And here’s the best part. I don’t need mental health days as often as I used to when my muse decides to go MIA.  Light bulb moment. . .maybe I’ve confused my muse. Maybe I’ve taken away her ability to rationalize, become frustrated and abandon me because jumping in and out of genre’s keeps her on her toes?

Or maybe, and more importantly, I’ve supplied her with the diversity that fuels her inner writer. Hey, I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, either way, this genre jumping is working for me and I’m grateful for that.

Have you ever thought about co-writing with someone?  Are you currently working on a project with another author and how is that going for both of you?

Best,

Cathy Tully

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

What is The Next Big Thing blog hop? Basically, it’s a way for readers to discover new authors. Bookstores are closing and publishers aren’t promoting new authors as much. The Next Big Thing is a way to introduce readers to authors they may not see in their local bookstore.

I’d like to thank fellow author Eyre Price for tagging me to participate. Click the link below to find out about Eyre’s latest book, BLUES HIGHWAY BLUES winner of the Jimi for Best Blues Book of the Year. “Mr. Price has given us a thriller full of blues, rock and roll and music history complete with rapscallions, thugs, and bad people too!”  Find out more about Eyre at his website: Eyreprice.net

Please feel free to comment and share your thoughts and questions. Here is my Next Big Thing!

1: What is the working title of your book?  SHE CAN TELL

2: Where did the idea come from for the book?  I’ve loved horses all my life. I taught riding lessons in college, and even own my own horse for almost 20 years. Setting a book at a horse farm felt natural.

3: What genre does your book come under? SHE CAN TELL doesn’t exactly fit into any one genre.  It’s a romantic suspense with thriller and mystery elements.

4: Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? Mike isn’t a pretty boy, so David Boreanaz (Bones) would play him nicely, and I like Rachel Bilson, ironically, as Rachel, mostly because of her spunk.

5: What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?  A vicious stalker, a cold murder, and a hot cop turn a horse trainer’s homecoming deadly.

6: Is your book self-published, published by an independent publisher, or represented by an agency? SHE CAN TELL is published by Montlake Romance,  and I’m repped by Jill Marsal of Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.

7: How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? SHE CAN TELL book took 9-10 months to write, mainly because my daughter was very ill halfway through my draft and I had to set writing completely aside for 3 months.  I guess that makes a net of 6 months actively writing the book. The first draft was actually the only draft. I’m not sure if karma decided to give me a break buy the manuscript needed no real revisions. (That has never happened again, BTW My current work-in-process is a total disaster.)

8: What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? There are numerous terrific romantic suspense authors I would love to be compared to, Allison Brennan, Kendra Elliiot, and Laura Griffin are just a few of my favorites.

9: Who or what inspired you to write this book? I wanted to continue the series that began with SHE CAN RUN. So, I combined my love of horses and murder mysteries into a new story.  A few of the characters from SHE CAN RUN have cameo appearances in the SHE CAN TELL.

10: What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?  I’ll let one a recent Amazon reviewer do it for me. “This book has it all, hot cop, steamy romance, suspense. I could not put it down and stayed up until 2 a.m. Enjoy!”

I love enthusiastic readers!

Below you will find authors who will be joining me by blog, next Wednesday. Do be sure to bookmark and add them to your calendars for updates on WIPs and New Releases! Happy Writing and Reading!

Judge A Genre By Its Cover Results

On Monday’s blog we had a little fun with the cover of my debut novel, CAPTIVE. Thank you to all who have checked out my cover, and to all who have voted on its genre. In the past three days, we had 329 views and 41 votes. I don’t know what happened to the other 288 people. Either they were the same 41 people checking back to see how the poll was going, or they were reading Rayna’s Ten Fun Fact About Wonder Woman, which was the second most popular blog post since Monday. 🙂

This is how the 41 votes broke down:

  • Contemporary Romance   0 votes         0%
  • Futuristic Romance            6 votes       14.63%
  • Historical Romance          18 votes       43.9%
  • Paranormal Romance      10 votes       24.39%
  • Erotic Romance                  3 votes          7.32%
  • Romantic Suspense           4 votes          9.76%

I must admit I was a bit surprised at the results. But…before I tell you what the genre is, I have some other news I’m thrilled to share.

Melinda informed me that my book is up on Amazon! I am so excited. I nearly wept when I saw my title, name, and the pre-order button. I didn’t cry, though, because my kids would have thought I was crazier than I already am.

ME: I have an ISBN number! It’s official baby!!

KIDS: Uh, Mom, are you okay?

ME: And three “Likes.” Oh my god, three people “Like” me!

KIDS: Ooo-kay (said in that drawn out what-the-heck voice teens and pre-teens do so well.)

I didn’t tell the kids that one of the “Likes” was my own. Hey, if I don’t “Like” myself, then how can I expect anyone else to? 😉

The cover image isn’t available on Amazon yet (at least it wasn’t at the writing of this blog), but the page count is – which I find amusing. How do they know the final number of pages? I haven’t even received the second round of revisions yet. You can also read the book description. I’m not sure who writes those (editor? marketing? someone else?) but I loved it.

Hmm…I just noticed Amazon’s product description says the book is ranked #650,922 on the best sellers list. Geez…that’s a big freaking number. *shrugs*  Anyway, CAPTIVE will be available electronically on April 1, 2013 and in paperback on April 2. You can also find it online at Barnes and Noble. And it’s already on sale there.

Okay…so back to the topic of the blog post…What genre is this cover?

It obviously isn’t a contemporary. Everyone got that right. It’s not an erotic romance, although there are some steamy scenes. 😳 And it’s not a romantic suspense, although there is an escape and a chase.

If you haven’t already clicked through to read the book description, it may come as a surprise to you that the majority of the voters were incorrect. CAPTIVE: Book 1 in the Survival Race Series) is not an historical romance. Yes there is a broadsword in the story, and gladiators.

But… these gladiators are fighting to the death on an alien planet and gambled upon for sport.

The novel isn’t set in the future time-wise, but I think it would still technically be considered a futuristic romance because of the alien world. You could argue that futuristic falls under the umbrella of paranormal. Okay, lets say both are correct. If we combine the futuristic and paranormal votes, we get 16, which is 39.02%. That’s still less than the 43.9% of votes for historical. This means that nearly half the people picking up the book expecting knights in shining armor will be disappointed if they chose this book based on cover alone. It’s a good thing Amazon lets you read before you buy.

I wonder if I should have added another category to my poll. Fantasy Romance. Since there is a mix of past and future in the book. Perhaps that is the element the cover is most conveying? Would you have chosen that if it were an option? If you had bought the book thinking it was a fantasy, would you be disappointed? Hmm…

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Please leave them in the comments section.

Off to RWA!

It’s that time again. Time for Romance Writers of America’s National conference. Since I’m crazed getting packed for the con I thought I’d re-post a blog that can serves as a packing reminder for some of us who have ‘been there and done that’ and as tips to consider for first-timers.

  • Have business cards at the ready.  They don’t need to be elaborate, just something simple with your name and contact information on it.  At this stage you’ll probably need to make them yourself unless you can get them made overnight at a local printer, but for the future maybe try GotPrint.com or VistaPrint.com. They make good quality inexpensive cards.
  • Dress professionally and comfortably. Consider wearing layers.  There is no happy medium when it comes to temperature at many of these conference sites. The best thing you can do is to have layers so that you’ll always be able to make yourself comfortable.
  • Don’t be afraid to mingle and make connections, but be sure to pay attention to social cues. You don’t want to accidentally cut in on an important discussion.
  • Even if you aren’t taking an editor/agent appointment have a pitch for your current work in progress ready to go. You never know whom you’ll wind up chatting with and what can come from that interaction. Remember editors and agents are people too. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s true.
  • Be mindful of your alcohol consumption.
  • Most importantly, enjoy yourself and let your creative juices be replenished by interacting with other writers.

Navigating your way around the conference is only part of the adventure. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe en route to the conference and while staying in the event hotel.

  • If possible travel with at least one travel companion.
  • Never tell anyone that you are traveling alone. If someone persistently asks, don’t hesitate to lie.
  • If attending a conference do not wear your name badge when you leave the event hotel.
  • Wear minimal jewelry. Lots of expensive and flashy jewelry makes you an easier target for predators. Also, consider using disposable cameras instead of bringing your digital camera. Expensive cameras are popular targets for thieves.
  • Never open up your door to any stranger and use all the locks on the door while in room.
  • Don’t open the door just because someone says security or maintenance.  Get the employee’s name and call the front desk to confirm before opening the door.
  • Avoid giving out your room number to anyone you meet in the bar or the trip.
  • Avoid leaving jewelry or credit cards in the room. Thieved don’t need the actual card, just the number and security code.
  • Lock your baggage if possible. (Airline locks are fine)
  • Avoid the scam this is the front desk calling please update your credit card information.
  • Never leave the plastic keys when you checkout. They can contain personal information.
  • If possible request a room closest to the elevators, more foot traffic, less secluded, more opportunity for crook to be seen
  • Try to avoid a room above the 10th floor; fire equipment usually does not reach that high.
  • Avoid going out alone at night and as always TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!

If you’re going to RWA, I hope to see you there. Both Melinda and I will be signing at the “Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing along with hundreds of other authors. The signing takes place in the Anaheim Convention Center, Wednesday, July 25, 2012, from 5–8 p.m. PT.

I’ll be at table 103 and Melinda will be at table 200. Stop by and say hello.

Safe Travels and we’ll see you in Cali!
